Return to Tumbalong
Our welcoming experience for Mirvac’s Site Office at their incredible new Harbourside project at Tumbalong, Darling Harbour, designed by Snøhetta and Hassel with First Nations consultants creates a dynamic entrance. It pushes the boundaries of environmental graphics, connects to Country and aligns to the Vision, Place Commitments and Cultural Statement of the project. Flowed through to Meeting Room Signage and Digital Screens, and the development’s ESG Statement, our work communicates the ebb and flow of nature and the evolution of time along Darling Harbour/Bimbalah Bay’s watery edge.
Emotive and informative
Our design reflects the project’s vision in an emotive way, illustrating the core objective of ‘Designing with Country’ and connecting visitors with the site and the central idea, ‘Return to Tumbalong, where all are welcome’. We drew references from our First Nations people and archaeological findings at the site and interpreted these into a cohesive approach throughout the space.
The hero
For the carved timber Welcome Wall, we pushed traditional graphic application methods to provide something truly memorable. Carved-out shapes, textures, and patterns illustrate the site’s ‘timeless thread’. An additional layer of storytelling is added on top with moving light elements created using projection mapping. This creates a deeper sensory experience using moving elements and changing graphics that can be updated alongside changes on site.
Unification through animation
The Welcome Wall animations play out on an enormous screen and walls in the boardroom. At a smaller scale, each meeting room has an interpretive entry panel, which increases cultural awareness and initiates further conversations. We used written and illustrated descriptions for the four meeting rooms to further enhance people’s understanding of the pronunciation, themes and storylines crafted around the history of Darling Harbour.
