Machine Hall
Navigating 100 years of history
At a dramatic new venue in Sydney’s CBD, 100 years of industrial history has been reimagined. In a collaboration between the City of Sydney and Built, Machine Hall has been redeveloped as a dynamic performance and events venue. Our bespoke wayfinding solution, designed for the main hall and amenities areas of the Machine Hall space, supports movement while being sympathetic to the incredible heritage of the site. As part of the leasing campaign we undertook for Built, we directed a photoshoot in the existing substation before renovation. The final images, taken by James Tolich, now feature as artworks on the walls of Machine Hall.
The space is part of a precinct spanning two heritage-protected buildings; Shelley’s Warehouse, a tobacco and alcohol warehouse building built in 1909, and the five-storey electricity substation built in 1930. Our design language uses debossing, embossing and brushed brass to convey a hand-crafted feel. We chose a monospace font and applied a chamfer detail to pictograms to reference the industrial feel of letterpress.
