University of Technology Sydney
Following its $1bn redevelopment with new landmark buildings by Gehry Partners and Denton Corker Marshall the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) wanted to grow its perception as a world leading institution. We were commissioned to design a wayfinding and signage system which uses 8,000 signs in 65 sign types across 19 buildings and 100 floors to help students, staff and the public find their way.

Navigating an expansive site
Following its $1bn redevelopment with new landmark buildings by Gehry Partners and Denton Corker Marshall the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) wanted to grow its perception as a world leading institution. An increasingly fragmented and growing campus stretching across 15 city properties prompted the university to address how navigation across its expansive city site could be improved. Our wayfinding and signage system, with digital integration by Brand Culture, uses 8,000 signs in 65 sign types across 19 buildings and 100 floors to help students, staff and the public find their way.
User experience and strategic consideration
We began by helping the university understand the physical and emotional experience for people navigating the vast and complex campus, reinforcing the importance of user experience as a key strategic consideration. We uncovered key insights through in-depth research, experience mapping and a series of stakeholder workshops. Our findings formed the basis of a new way-finding strategy that integrates the entire campus and the surrounding cityscape.
Digital integration
Public space branding, a building and room identification system, navigation signage, statutory signage, regulatory signs, information displays and a 400+ page wayfinding and signage manual were just part of the new system to greatly improve the experience. The digital integration of the system was developed by Brand Culture whose live wayfinding platform allows users to find destinations no matter where they are on campus either online or by smart phone.
