Exercise your imagination
In collaboration with architects Joey Ho and Patrick Leung from PAL Design Architects, we’ve created a brand identity, interiors, wayfinding and signage for an engaging play experience that helps families explore, connect and learn. Recognising the average play-centre fails parents and children with loud and over-stimulated environments, Nubo set out to redefine the sector with a beautiful, innovative space. Our brand philosophy ‘exercise your imagination’ has been instrumental in everything from the naming to the architectural design and directly informed how the brand is expressed throughout the space.
Head in the clouds
The word ‘Nubo’ translates to ‘cloud’ in Esperanto. When looking at clouds – a universal reference to dreaming and imagination. This idea is visually demonstrated in the brand logo utilising the ‘B’ as a cloud device and is flexibly executed across multiple brand touchpoints including the environmental signage program.
Symbols over words
One of the main challenges was to design spaces, signage and activities that catered for toddlers all the way up to 10-year-olds. There was varied physical difference, such as doorways and bathrooms only for kids, and developmental variation - we needed to consider the youngest kids who wouldn't be able to read signs. The wayfinding system is based on symbols rather than words, making it possible for children, even those too young to read, to navigate and explore the space independently.
Pure play
We helped formulate the activities required throughout the space, before designing dedicated interior spaces for themed learning to encourage children to engage through play. This included an art space, a room for investigative scientific learning and a theatre designed for presenting productions, yoga as well as other physical activity. All materials and products used in the design were chosen to fit seamlessly in with the interior architect’s scheme and be appropriate to the context and environment.
