Pathways to precinct
We’ve created an intuitive, simple and agile wayfinding and signage system to unify Melbourne Quarter — a complex precinct of commercial, residential and retail buildings beside Southern Cross Station in the heart of Melbourne. Our work helps a huge volume of people easily navigate the many pathways and buildings on the site, connecting the differing architecture styles. The graphic language sets a new benchmark for commercial wayfinding design.
Feeling familiar
Our system creates a familiar language to address complex challenges. The large site has a multitude of users – everyone from tourists to professionals. There are level changes between Aurora Lane and Collins Street, and a mix of private and public spaces. It’s also a staged development, with the entire precinct progressing at different times resulting in connectivity issues between the buildings and the surrounding urban landscape.
Consistent visual language
We specified illuminated lettering and placed it directly into the landscape, integrating it with critical features like steps and seating. Our signforms are black with a key chamfer feature – we discovered the multiple building designs feature this consistent architectural detail. This chamfer detail combined with the use of brass form the brand mark on the signage. The refined and minimal palette allows the signage scheme to be applied in any instance across the site or within the buildings and feel respectful of the architecture. Our signage scheme is organised into carefully segmented panel systems, so as the site develops and different signage messaging is required, only small areas of signs need to be replaced.
