Coogee Beach Lifeguards’ Pavilion
Safety first
We've used the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club cap to inspire the design of new building signage and graphics for the Coogee Beach Lifeguards’ Pavilion upgrade, designed in conjunction with Brewster Hjorth Architects. This includes change areas, a kiosk, and integral facilities for lifeguards and volunteers. Our playful system helps soften the aesthetic of the new concrete and metal architecture. With a focus on the front façade and what the structure looks like from the beach, the messaging considers safety as a key aspect of the design with an eye to the culture of one of Australia’s most famous beaches.
Life saver
Long-distance signals from the sand including the first aid cross were positioned as beacons visible across the beach, with the custom-designed Coogee centric placemaking font cast within the flat concrete during manufacture. The family change area features a bench space for small children to stand on while parents change them. Children can interact with the space by measuring themselves against a structural column that features a playful height marker applied as a graphic.
Public space
The consideration of strict regulations applied to this public space. With high amounts of pedestrian traffic and multiple architectural functions, we needed to employ a number of statutory and operational signforms. These signs, while regulatory in function, have been thoughtfully considered and adhered to whilst delivering an engaging space for the community to enjoy.
Information boards on the building façade allow lifeguards to update weather, tides and marine dangers, safety tips, patrol times and beach rules.
